The number of cookies in use to deliver Google Analytics service is described in the summary below.
How many types of Cookies are there?
__utmb and __utmc Cookies
The B and C cookies work together to calculate how long a visit takes. __utmb takes a timestamp of when a visitor enters a site, while __utmc takes a timestamp of when a visitor leaves a site. __utmb expires at the end of the session, whereas __utmc waits for 30 minutes, then it expires. The __utmc cookie does not have a way of knowing when a user leaves a site or closes their browser, so waits 30 minutes for another pageview to happen, and if not it will expire.
The Z cookie keeps track of where visitors are coming from, search engines used, the keyword used, the link that was clicked, and their current location when they accessed the website. Expiry is 6 months, (set at 15,768,000 seconds). This cookie allows Google Analytics to know who, what source, medium or keyword to assign the credit for Goal Conversions or Ecommerce Transactions. The __utmz cookie allows editing its length with a change to the Google Analytics Tracking code.
The V cookie is used if the user-defined report in Google Analytics is being used and there is some custom segmentation coded on-site. The V cookie gets set on the person’s computer, so Google Analytics knows how to classify that visitor. The V cookie is also a persistent, lifetime cookie.
What if Someone Deletes These Cookies from their Computers?
The B and C cookies are short term cookies so are gone before you know it, the A, Z and V cookie (if applicable) will remain for a long period of time. If someone deletes the A cookie, they are effectively deleting all history with a website. If they visit the website again, they are considered a brand new visitor, as they were the first time around.
